Thanks Mr. Jefferies

Until Matt Jefferies grand design we only had flying saucers, spaceships, rocket ships, etc. We knew the basic layout of every one of them too. People in the front and fire in the back. Most of them were powered with some sort of futuristic "sparkler" technology. Mr. Roddenberry told Matt that he didn't want that type of ship for this new endeavor. He wanted something much different. Matt listened and gave us the "starship." The USS Enterprise is ingrained in the brain of every Trekkie and almost any other sci-fi fan with a pulse. Mr. Jefferies gave us something special and lasting but he took some interesting twists and turns along the way. Some of his earlier designs employed a sphere instead of a saucer section. At first these designs seem clumsy and ungainly but when studied over time can take on a grace all their own. Much like the romanticism generated by tall sea ships of old, they embody an earlier, simpler time not frequently explored in Trek lore. Since at the time, access to models of this type of ship was limited, I began to design and make my own. Each of the models pictured below is a direct homage to Jefferies original designs.

Teach A Man To Make A Fish And......

I've been dabbling in the area of wood crafting for awhile. Wooden fish rendering, seems to be my niche. To the right of the page you can see some of my work so far. I've decided to consider what I do to be folk art because of it's definition. Wikipedia says that it's "produced from an indigenous culture or by peasants or other laboring tradespeople. In contrast to fine art, folk art is primarily utilitarian and decorative rather than purely aesthetic." In other words, it's decorative stuff made from a "blue collar" dude such as myself. My goal is to be the world's first and most famous, fully functional, sophisticated, Redneck, folk artist. Or at least make a meager, survivable living with it. Until then I'll settle for just having fun and selling enough to make the hobby self sustaining. If you're interested in purchasing a piece, I have several items available under the name "Caylin's Island Originals" at Maggie D's Cottage in downtown Thomasville, NC. I also have some items for sale at the Purple Pig Emporium, located in downtown Lexington, NC. I also offer custom work. Translated; tell me what you want and I'll do my best to duplicate it. Fish are my favorite subjects but I also enjoy making owls and whimsical signs as well. I'm also a bit of a Trekkie, so I'll be posting pics of my wooden scratch built models (not for sale unless someone really, really wants one) from time to time.
